2. a mysterious person, one whom it is hard to know or understand.
Vanessa is an all American occult woman, an ex-domina, kind of flirtatiously enjoying a long Mediterranean holiday. Juliano, the epitome of the arrogant continental stranger, breaks his principles, his comfortable shield against the unknown, and courts Vanessa, thinking he is the eagle, she the prey.
But Juliano is awfully wrong because she dumps him without giving a damn. Yet Vanessa's self-imposed world becomes a haunted and sinister one before long. Somebody is after her. Some kind of vendetta? Revenge is best served cold. First she thinks it is just the offended Juliano taking bizarre revenge, but later, when she is assaulted on the sea-front at night, she knows better. Considering the frightening note left with her, Vanessa does not want the police to be involved because the attack has something to do with her past, with her interest in occultism, the lethal dark arts.
"Please let Her come back to dominate, Her Majesty, or we will have to kill Her in the name of unruled slaves!" Juliano hears of her departure under odd circumstances from the mouth of an old crazy man who eye-witnessed to a fabulous assault, as he put it.
Curious to find out what is going on and to know a little more about America, Juliano flies there to track down Vanessa living in a solitary castlelike house. He spies on her, suspecting something is very wrong with her, yet he is attracted, he cannot help it. Vanessa's social circle consists of weird people deeply engaged in occultism shedding light or blood upon the altar of ultimate sacrifice, a shit magnet at play. Juliano believes her life to be in danger after seeing a few scary scenes. When he finally interferes in favor of her Vanessa sends him to hell minding his own business. Subsequently, Juliano devotes his nosy time to exploring America in its fucked up diversity, Merryka, Merryka, hell, sweet hell. Overwhelmed, he temporarily forgets about Vanasty and the bloody occult.
The turning point comes when he happens to read an article on an occult murder and learns it has connections with Vanessa as a cult leader. Juliano becomes obsessed with reading books on the subject and looks for trouble, again, knowing more about the case on his own instead of cooperating with the police.
The cult members catch Juliano and are prepared to rid of him because he knows too much. They find it possible that Vanessa would help him escape eventually because they know she had a strange and dark affair with him overseas. Besides, they rebel against Vanessa as their leader, saying she is no more the way she used to be since she left the cult and was forced to return. Dominatrix no more !
So both Vanessa and Juliano are set in a death row. Will they manage to escape the deadly trap into which each sort of voluntarily got? And at what price? How does Vanessa feel about the terrible fact that Juliano goes blind after being hit so many times in the bloody fight? Will the doctors change the perspective? Will the sphinx make herself understood? Will they both find a reason to really hang on?
